Most people know collagen is excellent for skin, muscles, and connective tissues. But what’s less well-known is that collagen is essential to healthy bone. It’s true! In one study, 131 postmenopausal women were given 5 grams of collagen per day or a placebo for 12 months. The investigators examined changes in the femoral neck (where the thigh bone joins with the hip bone), an area particularly vulnerable to osteoporosis. After 12 months, the women in the treatment group showed improved bone mineral density and increased bone formation in the femoral neck. The study authors also reported favorable shifts in bone markers, indicating a reduction in the rate of bone loss.9 

In a follow-up study four years later, the participants showed that with consistent collagen supplementation, their bone loss continued to slow down, with many reporting an increase in their bone mineral density. Furthermore, none of the participants who continued the collagen supplementation experienced fractures during the four years.10 

In another study, postmenopausal women with osteopenia (a precursor to osteoporosis) were divided into two groups. One group was given a calcium, vitamin D, plus collagen supplement. The other group was given a calcium and vitamin D supplement with no collagen. 

At the end of the study, the collagen group showed lower reductions in bone mineral density than the calcium-vitamin D group and significantly reduced blood markers for bone breakdown.11 In other words, their bones were stronger with collagen!

    I knew about it. I am looking to buy the best collagen supplement for it but I already got informed that we can buy bone marrow( beef, lamb) or feet bone / leg from a cow and cook for one hour into a pressure cooker. The bone has also many minerals for our bones. This is my next step in helping my bones that pet scan showed some lesions and they don’t know if it is a tumor related, a medicine side effects since I am also taking letrozol. Letrozol kills your bone so I decided to get the supplements instead of conventional medication ( zometa) that has several horrid side effects.

    I currently use a colostrum bone/skin/hair, etc. supplement. I switched for a bit to plain collagen and immediately saw pronounced hair loss, peeling nails and soft, fleshy gums. I will be willing to try the AlgaeCal product once it’s available but if I notice any of the negative side affects mentioned I will go back to the colostrum product! How is your collagen different/superior to others?

    I have been taking AlgaeCal for about 6 mo for osteopenia and my ca blood levels are normal. I also take vit D and Strontium supplements. I will be getting my bone density exam next mo. My real issue as a Breast Ca survivor is nutropenia probably caused by the radiation therapy I underwent. I know that kind of bone marrow damage is permanent but they watch my white counts every 3 mo to be sure it doesn’t develop into MDS . Can these supplements be helpful at all for that??? Just asking.

    What Colligen are you talking about? I remember you asking us what type of Colligen we are taking. I have tried 3 or 4 brands of Collagen. The first one was Great Lakes Wellness. Then I took Doctor’s Best Collagen types 1 % 3 in pill form. Which I sometimes still take. Then I tried Earthtone Foods Grass-fed Collagen peptides Pasture-raised with Non-GMO’s. I am back too Great Lakes Collagen. Do you have any advice? Are you going to offer one?

    Below is what I found during my research, but I always recommend discussing this with a healthcare professional for their best recommendations:

    Collagen is a protein, and for some people, increasing protein intake can slow down digestion. Protein digestion requires water, and collagen supplements might increase your water needs.

    With this in mind, here are our suggestions: hydrate well, start with a smaller dose of collagen and gradually increase it to give your digestive system time to adjust, incorporate more high-fiber foods into your diet, choose the right form: experiment with different brands or types of collagen (powder, liquid, capsules) to see if one works better for you without causing constipation.

    By making these adjustments, you may be able to continue taking collagen without experiencing constipation. However, if the problem persists, it might be necessary to discontinue its use and explore alternative supplements or dietary changes for your health goals. I hope this helps!
