We’ve got something you’ll love.

Simply print this handy chart out and stick it on your fridge. Following this daily routine will make sure your supplements are spaced out correctly, and you’ll absorb everything effectively.

How to take AlgaeCal

Scheduling Your AlgaeCal Supplements

  • AlgaeCal Plus and AlgaeCal Basic should be taken with food. For AlgaeCal Plus (4 capsules a day), most folks take 2 capsules with breakfast and 2 capsules with dinner. For AlgaeCal Basic (3 capsules a day) most folks take 1 capsule with every meal. You only need a small amount of food (just enough to stimulate the production of stomach acid to help you absorb the nutrients in the supplement), so you can take your capsules with a snack if you prefer.
  • Strontium Boost and AlgaeCal Plus/Basic should be taken 2-3 hours apart to ensure they don’t compete for absorption.
  • Strontium Boost should also be taken 2-3 hours apart from consuming calcium-rich foods. Strontium Boost can be taken with or without food (as it reads on the product label), but most folks take it right before bed on an empty stomach.
  • You can take Triple Power Omega 3 Fish Oil right off the spoon (it’s that tasty.) But if you prefer, you can take your Triple Power with food as it doesn’t have any interactions. In fact, lots of people enjoy taking their Triple Power with breakfast because the natural mango flavor pairs well with granola, fruits, and yogurt.

Separating AlgaeCal From Other Supplements and Medications

Other Supplements

A general rule of thumb is to take supplements containing high amounts of calcium or iron 2 to 3 hours before or after your AlgaeCal Plus or AlgaeCal Basic, and Strontium Boost. Separating these supplements will help ensure you receive maximum absorption from all your supplements.

You should also separate taking Strontium Boost from supplements containing high amounts of calcium or iron too.

Prescription Medication

It’s also best to separate certain prescription medication you take from your AlgaeCal and Strontium Boost capsules. A general rule of thumb is to separate prescription medications and AlgaeCal supplements by 2-4 hours.

For example, medications to treat thyroid conditions or acid reflux typically need to be taken at least 4 hours before or after you take your AlgaeCal supplements. If you’re unsure about your particular medications, we advise you to confirm your regimen with your doctor or pharmacist.

If You Forget To Take Your AlgaeCal

Sometimes you might forget to take your AlgaeCal supplements…but don’t worry! It happens.

If you forget to take one of your doses of AlgaeCal Plus or AlgaeCal Basic during the day, it’s best to take it a little later on rather than skip it all together (with a little snack to ensure your body absorbs the capsule, of course.)

Remember though; if you take Strontium Boost as well as AlgaeCal Plus or Basic, you need to separate taking the supplements by 2-3 hours. So if you forgot to take a dose of AlgaeCal Plus/Basic during the day and took it a little later than you usually would, when should you take your Strontium Boost?

Well, if you’ll be awake for another 2-3 hours after taking your second dose of AlgaeCal, you can still take your Strontium Boost before you go to bed. But if you take your forgotten second dose of AlgaeCal right before bedtime, take your Strontium Boost in the middle of the night. Like when you wake to use the bathroom for example.

Pssst…Did you know the recommended daily amount of calcium intake for women 51 and older is 1200 mg from food and supplements combined? (For other ages ranges, check out our main calcium page.)

AlgaeCal Plus (720 mg) or Basic (750 mg) will provide a good portion of your daily target, but you’ll typically still need around 500 mg of calcium from your diet too. The good news is, the Standard American Diet provides about 500 mg per day, which should get you to target!

However, we wanted to make it easy for you so we created the top sources of calcium in another of our printable PDFs: Top 42 Calcium-Rich Foods Shopping List.

I’ve been using Strontium Plus and AlgeaCal Plus for a couple of years (with great success according to my DEXT scans). But, I’ve been taking one Strontium Plus in the morning upon rising and one at bedtime. The recommendation above is to take it before bed. Is there a problem taking one in the morning and and one at bedtime instead of just at bedtime?

    November 11, 2016 , 7:17 am

    Hi Patricia,

You can take both capsules of Strontium Boost at the same time to make it easier. We do recommend right before bed because when people wake-up they usually have breakfast soon after. Strontium should not be taken within 2-3 hours of calcium-containing foods so it makes it easier to take it at night, a few hours after dinner and before bed to avoid any absorption issues. But, if you take it in the morning and don’t eat 2-3 hours after taking it, then you can continue your routine!

I’ve always taken my Strontium Boost about halfway between breakfast and dinner, leaving 3-4 hours either direction. Is there any reason bedtime would be better?

  6. Monica

    November 11, 2016 , 9:15 am

    Hi Ellen,

As long as you are taking Strontium Boost 2-3 hours apart from meals, it is fine. Most people find it easier to take it right before bed, but if your routine works, then that is great!

My husband and I take Strontium at lunch time to keep it away from the Algaecal Plus but as we have not been on it for long I don’t know if this is working. As we are retired we usually have meat, salad and potatoes for lunch so I didn’t think it was a problem as I don’t think there is any calcium in this type of meal. Should we change to before bed?

  8. Monica

    November 14, 2016 , 12:57 pm

    Hi Barbara,

Taking Strontium Boost at bed will definitely yield the best result. In a salad depending on the portion and type of veggies, there can be between 50 to 100mg or even more of calcium. Those would occupy the receptors strontium needs in order to be absorbed and may cause some Strontium Boost to be flushed out from your system. Ideally, Strontium Boost should not be taken with a meal.

How do AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium Boost fit in with my thyroid med dose? Currently I take the AlgaeCal with breakfast and dinner, the thyroid medication at bedtime and the strontium on waking, which is several hours before breakfast.

  12. Monica

    November 14, 2016 , 12:55 pm

    Hi Liz,

Usually, thyroid medications are taken first thing in the morning and so we would recommend AlgaeCal Plus at lunch and dinner (4 hours apart to prevent any possible interaction) and Strontium Boost at bedtime.

But your current schedule works as well!

    November 12, 2016 , 9:00 pm

    Hi Eleanor,

It’s true that you should avoid eating foods with phytic acid and oxalic acid when taking AlgaeCal or other supplements. Wheat and whole grains tend to be high in these acids, but don’t affect calcium absorption as much as other foods such as spinach, beans, nuts, and seeds. [https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Calcium-HealthProfessional/] For extra precaution you could space this out. If you’d like to call in and speak more in depth about this with one of our Bone Health Advisors you can do so toll-free Canada and USA: 1-800-820-0184.

I hadn’t even heard about phytic and oxalic acid. So now I’m confused. I eat a lot of berries which shows there is a considerable amount of oxalic acid in them. Crazy trying to eat healthy and not interfere with calcium absorption. Can you shed any light on this? Thank you!

  22. Monica

    December 29, 2016 , 8:12 am

    Hi Vicki,

Yes, it seems like you’ve been taking more than one tablespoon per day. It should be equivalent to 15g per day, which will give you 28 days of Triple Power.

  28. Monica

    July 23, 2017 , 9:02 am

    Hi Paulette,

Although uncommon, increased thirst after probiotic supplementation has been reported as a side effect. Switching to a different probiotic, supplementing with a lower dose or discontinuing altogether are options – but it is best to discuss this with your doctor.

Can I take AlgaeCal plus and caltrate together.

  30. Monica

    November 18, 2017 , 12:07 am

    Hi Hawaii Parlor,

If you are taking a daily dose of AlgaeCal Plus, which provides you 720 mg of calcium, you will be getting the recommended 1200 mg of calcium per day from all sources as the Standard American Diet also provides ~400-600 mg of calcium. So you shouldn’t be needing to take additional supplemental calcium like calcium citrate unless your doctor has suggested this for whatever reason. If so, AlgaeCal Plus would still be the optimal calcium source over calcium citrate.

Is there a particular reason you’d like to take two different calcium sources? If you’d like to call in and speak to a Bone Health Consultant they can discuss what may be best for you – and how to take your supplements if needed. You can call 1-800-820-0184.

    Hope that helps!

  32. Jenna AlgaeCal

What is the difference between Algae Cal Plus and Basic?

  34. Jenna AlgaeCal

    January 19, 2018 , 9:30 am

    Hi Sharon,

Great question! AlgaeCal Plus is our bone-building formulation that is for any adult looking to maintain or increase their bone density. It has added bone-building vitamins that aren’t found in AlgaeCal Basic, like vitamin C, vitamin K2, boron, and extra magnesium.

The AlgaeCal Basic formulation is great for those taking certain prescription anticoagulant medications. If that is the case, then we highly recommend the AlgaeCal Basic formulation, as the vitamin K2 in AlgaeCal Plus is contraindicated with those drugs.

Please let us know if you have any questions or need help selecting the right formulation for you! You can call 1-800-820-0184 or email [email protected], and our Bone Health Consultants will be happy to assist you 🙂

    Hi Nina,

We’re happy to see one of our Bone Health Consultants has responded to your questions via email! To reiterate, it is unnecessary to take additional calcium as you will be getting all of the calcium you need from AlgaeCal Plus & your daily diet. However, you may need to take additional vitamin D3 (as most of us are deficient!) If you have any further questions or concerns, you can also call to speak with one of our Bone Health Consultants, who will be glad to help you at 1-800-820-0184.

I take my thyroid med in the morning. I have to wait 4 hours to consume any calcium food or product. So I am taking the Algaecal with lunch and dinner. However, I can’t figure out when to take my multi, which contains a small amount of calcium as well. Also taking Stronium at bed time.
Also my multi contains K, and the Algaecal K2. Any issue with taking both?

  40. Jenna AlgaeCal

    April 18, 2018 , 3:39 pm

    Hi Cherri,

It sounds like you are right on track with scheduling your AlgaeCal Plus & Strontium Boost! To avoid absorption interactions, we recommend keeping your multivitamin at least 2 hours apart from AlgaeCal products. You could take your multi between lunch and dinner, or between dinner and bedtime. Keep in mind, AlgaeCal is providing you with all of the vitamins and minerals necessary for bone building. If you would still like to continue your multi, that’s no problem! There’s no issue with taking both as long as they are kept at least 2 hours apart.

If you need any further assistance with scheduling feel free to call our Bone Health Consultants at 1-800-820-0184 🙂

I have just started to take Algaecal and Strontium Boost but have been taking Evacal D3. Is it worth continuing to take these – or at least 1 tablet per day – for the extra D3?

  44. Jenna AlgaeCal

    July 10, 2018 , 4:16 pm

    Hi Cathy,

You’ll be getting all of the calcium your body needs from AlgaeCal and your diet! So we wouldn’t recommend continuing with additional supplementation that contains calcium.

In saying that, it’s usually still a good idea to supplement with vitamin D3! The daily dose of AlgaeCal contains 1,600 IU, however the majority of people are deficient, and you may need more than this. We always suggest having your vitamin D levels checked via a blood test to determine your unique needs (some people do require up to 10,000 IU per day, so it’s really important to do this). When you have the result of your blood test, you can make sure you’re getting the right amount here.

Hi I’m taking the AlgaeCal and Strontium Boost at Bedtime. 2 questions here 1: I’m headache prone and when I take 2 Strontium on some occasions I have gotten a headache so I have reduced it to 1 pill. Is this better than nothing? Secondly, I mix my AlgaeCal into my breakfast shake by opening the capsules as I have trouble with some pills. Can I mix it into my food? Also can I open the Strontium pills at bedtime and if so what can I put it in not to lessen the effect?

  57. Jenna AlgaeCal

    December 17, 2018 , 2:18 pm

    Thanks for reaching out, Jen!

    1. We’re so sorry to hear you’ve been having a bit of trouble with the Strontium. Yes, 1 capsule of Strontium Boost is better than nothing. Of course, we do recommend taking 2 capsules if possible to maximize the benefits — as the best results in our human clinical studies were seen with the full dose!

Jen, it’s uncommon for Strontium Boost to cause any reaction because it’s natural, and human clinically tested to not cause side effects. In saying that, we understand everyone is different and can react to natural vitamins or minerals. We would love to work with you to identify if it is strontium which is bothering you, or perhaps something else! Have you had a chance to stop the strontium and try a slow reintroduction back into your daily regimen?

    2. You can absolutely mix your AlgaeCal into food! You can do the same with your Strontium Boost, just be sure the food is low in calcium (contains less than 100 mg). AlgaeCal mixes well into semi-solid foods, such as applesauce, mashed banana, and peanut butter.

Hopefully this is helpful! Feel free to contact our Bone Health Consultants at 1-800-820-0184 if you have questions or need support throughout the reintroduction process ❤️

I agree. I had to come off the algaecal and strontium supplements too at first. My body reacts funny to new meds. So I called the hotline and she advised me to come off all the supplements and restart them slowly after all the symptoms had dissipated, then slowly reintroduce them back. I am taking just the Algaecal 2X per day, opened and mixed in applesauce. Can I eat calcium rich foods with it?.

    Absolutely, Wendy!

Calcium-rich foods only need to be separated from the Strontium Boost. 🙂

So, no problem opening up the AlgaeCal plus and mixing with food like yogurt?

  68. Megan AlgaeCal

    July 19, 2019 , 2:06 pm

Hi Angela, thanks for checking in!

Mixing AlgaeCal Plus with yogurt is a great idea! Others have also mixed it with smoothies, nut butters, cottage cheese, or anything with that semi-solid” consistency. We simply don’t recommend mixing it into very hot foods

  69. Margaret

    January 17, 2020 , 1:48 am

I have read that only 500mg of calcium can be absorbed at one time, so would it not be advisable to check that a food source eaten at the same time as taking AlgaeCal, such as yoghurt or other dairy products contained only 140 mg or less?

  70. Megan AlgaeCal

    January 21, 2020 , 8:34 am

Hi Margaret, thanks for pointing that out!

Yes, you’re absolutely right that we suggest trying to keep food sources of calcium at 140mg or less if taken with AlgaeCal. We want to balance this guideline with making it as easy as possible to fit AlgaeCal into your daily schedule, so if yogurt is a typical breakfast or snack and it provides slightly more than 140mg, then that’s okay 🙂

Thanks again for bringing up this important point!

    March 27, 2019 , 10:41 am

I have been taking the AlgaeCal plus and the Strontium since last Sept. I have started taking the Strontium about 2 1/2 hrs. after lunch, which is noon. I eat cottage cheese and unsweetened peaches. I take the AlgaeCal with Breakfast and around 5:30/6:00. I was noticing that in the mornings I was really groggy and NO energy! Since I changed the time on the Strontium, I feel a LOT better in the morning! Just wanted to make sure this time frame would be ok.

  72. Jenna AlgaeCal

    March 27, 2019 , 11:50 am

Glad to hear you found a schedule that feels right for you, Brenda! It’s no problem to take your Strontium Boost in the daytime as long as it’s 2+ hours apart from AlgaeCal Plus and calcium-rich foods — just like you’re doing. ?

  73. Sherry Banaka

    April 28, 2019 , 12:50 pm

I’m having a hard time figuring out when to take my AlgaeCal Plus. I try to limit my foods to organic and typically have a 4 oz glass of orange juice and a small whole grain breakfast bar with my morning coffee, followed by probiotic yogurt mixed with whole grain granola and blueberries or cherries. If I snack, it’s usually a combination of nuts and seeds or whole grain chips, and occasionally some dark chocolate. For lunch and dinner, I usually eat some combination of leafy greens like spinach or baby greens, vegetables, eggs, chicken or turkey, lentils or beans, some cheese, and occasionally ham or beef. According to the information posted above, I should not consume any of these except the eggs and meats with the AlgaeCal, since most of the foods I eat will apparently interfere with absorption. Can you please advise me when I should take the AlgaeCal Plus? (I also take StrontiumBoost at bedtime with an apple and peanut butter, and apparently that’s not a problem.)

  74. Jenna AlgaeCal

    April 29, 2019 , 2:29 pm

I’m glad you reached out, Sherry! It sounds like there may be some confusion — there’s no restriction on the types of food you can have with AlgaeCal Plus, so you could take it with the meals or snacks you outlined. (Which sound very healthy and delicious by the way!)

You only need to keep your Strontium Boost separate from calcium-rich foods to avoid absorption interactions. An apple and peanut butter are no problem, as you said.

I have been taking AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium Boost for about 3 weeks now. My total calcium intake seems to be greater than 1200mg. unless my calculations are wrong. Is that a problem?

  76. Jenna AlgaeCal

    June 12, 2019 , 9:57 am

    Hi Carole,

Good question. You do want to be consuming at least 1,200 mg of calcium each day, but no more than 1,500 mg regularly (on occasion going over is no big deal!) Keep in mind, the calcium you’re consuming on top of what’s in AlgaeCal should be coming from food sources, and not from additional supplementation. To double check the amount of calcium you’re getting from your diet we suggest using an app like MyFitnessPal for a few days.

If you have further questions please don’t hesitate to call our Bone Health Consultants at 1-800-820-0184!

I just started AlgaeCal Plus and strontium.
    I take my
    -thyroid medication at 6:00 am
-Eat breakfast and take 2 AlgaeCal and 2000 units of vitamin D at 10:00 am
-take my 2 strontium at 2:00 pm
    – eat dinner and take my 2AlgaeCal between 5 or 6 pm.
    – I also like to take 1000mg Vitamin C, hair, skin and nails vitamin, kelp, B-12 and collagen pill. When should I take the extra pills and also am I spacing the AlgaeCal and Strontium ok?
Also I’m finding the AlgaeCal or strontium constipating. What can I take to help with that? Thanks!

  80. Blaire AlgaeCal

    July 30, 2019 , 11:23 am

    Hi Linda,

Looks like you’re doing an awesome job spacing the AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium Boost! It’s great to see you are keeping the thyroid medication 4 hours away from our products. You can take the other supplements you listed alongside AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium Boost. However, if any of your supplements contain calcium, magnesium, iron, or zinc, please take them at least 2 hours away from our products.

We’re so sorry to hear that you have been experiencing constipation while taking our products. This is unusual and not something you should be experiencing with AlgaeCal Plus or Strontium Boost! Constipation can be a sign of a calcium/magnesium imbalance and is often something that is easily rectified through dietary changes and the right nutrition. Please email [email protected] or call our Bone Health Consultants at 1-800-820-0184 – we would love to work with you to determine the cause and make sure you are feeling 100%. I can’t find the way to ask my questions about when to take my Algae Cal and Strontium Boost. I take meds for thyroid, reflux, and high blood pressure along with other vitamins. I see that there is supposed to be a four hour time between thyroid and reflux meds (supposed to take those twice a day) and the Algae Cal. I was taking the Strontium at bedtime along with my blood pressure med and now see that isn’t recommended. How in the world can I work all of this in???

    Hi Janice,

So glad you reached out to us! We understand balancing your medications and our supplements can be daunting at first – we’re more than happy to set up a schedule for you. Hi Blair’s,
Can you have allergic reaction to Algaecal or strontium? I’ve been taking them now for 6 days and my throat is on fire! It burns and is very red. I called one of your people to find out what to do and he said to stop them right away until the burning goes away and then start the AlgaeCal first slowly cutting the dose in half to see what happens. If nothing happens then start the strontium to see if any reaction to that. I’m hoping I can figure it out. Have you heard of that reaction before?

  84. Blaire AlgaeCal

    August 2, 2019 , 3:56 pm

    Hi Linda,

Thanks for getting back to us! So sorry to hear about your throat – that sounds very painful. It is unlikely to develop an allergic reaction to AlgaeCal products; however, it is still possible to experience a sensitivity. It’s best to consult with your doctor/allergist for their recommendation. Have you tried the slow reintroduction yet? Please keep us updated on how it goes and we’re hoping this clears up very soon for you!

One of the Algae clients commented that she takes her Sr at night with an apple and peanut butter. HOWEVER, AlgaeCal’s schedule at the beginning of these comments states Sr should be taken on an empty stomach?

Please clarify and keep up the good work and comments – I am about to venture into taking the AlgaeCal+ combo i.e Sr. I find these Q&A’s extremely helpful .

    Hi Leo!

Thank you for your kind words! ? We’re so glad you’re finding the Q&As helpful.

Sorry for the confusion! While Strontium Boost is commonly taken on an empty stomach, it can be taken either with or without food. We simply recommend keeping it 2+ hours apart from foods rich in calcium (100mg or more). This is because calcium and strontium will compete with each other for absorption if taken together!

Hope this helps and don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions, Leo! ?

I take magnesium supplements and it is hard to separate 2 hours between taking algaecal. It looks like algaecal has magnesium in it, so why can’t you take magnesium with the Algaecal? I am so confused, and it’s hard to get them all in sometimes at night there is not enough time.

  90. Megan AlgaeCal

    October 4, 2019 , 10:50 am

Hi Peggy, thanks for reaching out!

Sorry to have caused any confusion! The amount of magnesium in AlgaeCal would not be enough to interfere with the absorption of calcium. However, taking large amounts of magnesium may reduce absorption of the calcium in AlgaeCal. Peggy, keep in mind that a daily serving of AlgaeCal Plus provides 350mg of magnesium and for most people, another magnesium supplement is not necessary as a balanced diet combined with the 350mg in AlgaeCal Plus is generally enough to meet daily requirements.

If you do continue to take an additional magnesium supplement, it can be taken at the same time as Strontium Boost but it’s best to take it at least 2 hours apart from AlgaeCal Plus.

Hope this is somewhat helpful, Peggy! For more information on scheduling please don’t hesitate to call our Bone Health Consultants at 1-800-820-0184. Sometimes it’s a little easier to discuss over the phone and they’d be more than happy to help you create a personalized schedule! 🙂

  94. Blaire AlgaeCal

    October 4, 2019 , 10:07 am

    Hi Randy,

Good questions! Although AlgaeCal is indeed vegetarian, it is not vegan. The source for our vitamin D3 is lanolin (from wool wax). No animals are harmed in the making of this, but it is considered an animal product, and therefore AlgaeCal is not considered vegan.

For anyone taking an older class of blood thinner, we have a formulation called AlgaeCal Basic which does not contain vitamin K2! You can see it here.

  98. Megan AlgaeCal

    December 3, 2019 , 2:13 pm

Hi Phyllis, thanks for reaching out!

Yes, drinking more water will help your body adjust to taking a new supplement. A helpful way to remember this is to simply drink an extra cup of water each time you take AlgaeCal. Since vitamin D3 supplementation requirements vary greatly from person to person, it’s important to assess how much you need. You’ll find our article on vitamin D helpful for this.

Hello there — I have just ordered the Bone Builder Pack and will be starting it soon. I frequently adhere to an intermittent fasting regimen in which I eat ONLY one meal a day (around 5pm).
As an FYI, I do have a cup of coffee with cream every morning which isn’t considered a break in the fast.
My question is, should I take all 4 of my daily AlgaeCalPlus with the one evening meal? Or is the cream in the AM sufficient to process the Calcium?
(Taking the Strontium before bed hours 2-4 hours after eating is of course no problem.)
    Thanks!

Glad you reached out! Thanks for sharing a bit about yourself. We would recommend taking 2 AlgaeCal Plus with your cup of coffee and 2 with your evening meal. So I have been taking this product for over a year and there was a small improvement in my bone density. I wasn’t following proper way to consume your product for almost 1/2 of the year. I’ve corrected that problem. However I am confused. I am getting 720mg of calcium from your product but should be getting 1200mg per day. Where do I get the rest of my calcium? There is 50 mg in vitamins I have just started. I also have Kidney stones so can’t consume tooooo much calcium.
My other question is can I take Strontium in early am as I get up around 6 but don’t eat breakfast til almost 10 on most days. then do algaeCal later in day cause I can sometime forget one dose and have to stay up past 12 am to get strontium in.

In saying that, the nutrients in a supplement are not bound within a food matrix, so far less stomach acid is needed to enable their release and absorption. We do recommend taking our products at least 4 hours apart from your PPI to maximize absorption.

We also encourage you to consult your doctor about identifying the underlying causes of your reflux so that you can address those! We also have a post on some home remedies to help combat acid reflux here.

Hope this helps! If you have any further questions, feel free to give us a call at 1-800-820-0184 🙂

    Hi there,

So glad you reached out to us! We’re happy to help.

Not to worry, you can consume milk/dairy products at the same time as AlgaeCal Plus ? We simply recommend that calcium-rich foods be consumed at least 2 hours away from Strontium Boost.

    Hi Victoria, good question!

Does your multivitamin contain high amounts of calcium as well? If so, you may want to take it 2 hours apart from AlgaeCal or Strontium Boost. If you haven’t already done so, we also encourage you to give our Bone Health Consultants a call at 1-800-820-0184. Hello. I am 40 years old and my femoral neck is at the point of osteoporosis and my hip is osteopenia. Do you think, if I live to be pretty “old” that I could take AlgaeCal for 50 years??

  137. Megan AlgaeCal

    November 27, 2020 , 3:25 pm

    Hi there, good question!

Yes, after all AlgaeCal is simply providing vitamins and minerals that your bones need to regain health and strength. To give you a bit more information about our products, we recommend taking our Bone Builder Pack (AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium Boost) until you’re back into a healthy bone density range. At this point, we suggest AlgaeCal Plus alone for maintenance – as bone loss is a natural, ongoing process it’s important to continue overcoming bone loss with the nutrients in AlgaeCal!

As always, if you have medical conditions or are taking medications, we recommend first consulting your doctor before starting new supplements. Hope this information helps and don’t hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] or 1-800-820-0184 (USA & Canada toll-free) if you have any further questions! ❤️

While the serving size for the nutrition label is 2 capsules, you’ll notice that under the Suggested Use section of the bottle, it says to take 4 capsules daily for increased bone strength. We apologize for any confusion!

    May 4, 2021 , 7:16 am

I was wondering if you can take the products in the event a little calcium was taken or should it be absolutely no calcium at all.

  150. Megan AlgaeCal

    May 4, 2021 , 11:48 am

    Good question, Croua!

A little calcium is okay. For Strontium Boost, we recommend no more than 100mg of calcium be taken at the same time or within 2 hours of taking Strontium Boost. For AlgaeCal, because our bodies can only absorb ~500mg of calcium at once, we recommend staying below this to maximize your calcium absorption.

I’m looking for the answer to this question as well. Can I take strontium with my morning coffee?

  152. Shelby AlgaeCal

    August 1, 2023 , 8:59 am

This is a great question, Ava! You can absolutely take Strontium Boost with morning coffee! However, it may not be the best time to take it if you tend to add calcium-rich milk, cream, etc. to your coffee. You see, strontium and calcium compete for absorption, so as a rule of thumb, it’s best to separate anything rich in calcium from Strontium Boost by at least 2 hours. I hope this helps, and if you need any assistance with creating a tailored schedule for taking AlgaeCal supplements, our Bone Health Consultants would love to help over the phone at 1-800-820-0184 (USA & Canada toll-free). 🙂

We recommend taking our Bone Builder Pack (AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium Boost) until you’re back into a healthy bone density range – the amount of time this takes will vary depending on factors like the severity of bone loss, lifestyle habits, etc. Once you’re in a healthy bone density range, we recommend continuing AlgaeCal for bone health maintenance.

Hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions 🙂

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis earlier this summer, and I was so excited to learn about your products and their promising bone building results. I’ve just started taking AlgaeCal Plus with the Strontium Boost a few weeks ago. My question is, should I stop drinking coffee? I LOVE coffee and have read a lot about its antioxidant properties, but I’ve also read that coffee can inhibit calcium absorption. I certainly don’t want anything to interfere with my AlgaeCal supplements. I mainly drink decaf because too much caffeine makes me jittery – don’t know if that makes a difference.

I would appreciate any insight or advice. Thank you for your help!

We are so sorry to hear about your diagnosis, Gwen, but we are also so glad that you found us and we would love to be part of your bone health journey!

Coffee can increase urinary excretion of calcium, but only by a bit and this can be offset by taking your coffee with a source of calcium and eating a calcium-rich diet. Coffee recommendations differ based on body weight, but researchers suggest limiting coffee to 3 cups a day. If you’d like to learn more, we have a great article on coffee and bone health here

Hi Harshida, thanks for reaching out!

Yes, AlgaeCal is a complete bone health supplement that’s clinically supported to increase bone density and we recommend it as part of every bone health regimen. After all, your bones still require the nutrients in AlgaeCal, even if you are taking bone medication.

We suggest speaking to your doctor about changes to your medication and supplement intake. We have an excellent information sheet you can share with your doctor here.

Is it OK to empty the contents of the capsules into water and drink?

  171. Ishneet AlgaeCal

    September 1, 2021 , 11:45 am

    Great question, Ruth!

We actually do not recommend adding it to the water as it contain minerals and because of their heavier nature it will not be completely soluble! You can twist open the capsules and mix the tasteless powder into foods like smoothies, yogurt, nut butters, applesauce, and oatmeal. We simply don’t recommend very hot foods or drinks as the heat may reduce the potency of some vitamins. Let us know if any questions!

I’m just ordering my first AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium Boost, 6 months supply. I’m just over the line into osteoporosis in my spine, osteopenia near osteoporosis in my hips and neck. I also take a natural porcine supplement for my thyroid, a combination supplement (Migravert) for my migraines that contain 360 mg magnesium, 99 mg of potassium for leg cramps and 1160 mg turmeric for arthritis. I take other supplements as well, but I’ve been reading questions from others and have cleared them. So… I’m planning on taking my thyroid med between 6-8 am, my first AlgaeCal plus with either a late breakfast or early lunch, my second AlgaeCal with dinner, and then Strontium Boost with all my other supplements before I go to bed, which includes my Migraine supplement that contains 360 mg magnesium. Just recently started taking AlgaeCal, 2 capsules once a day, started slow as I am very sensitive to medication. After a few days introduced the Strontium Boost, one capsule at bedtime, mixed with food. After my third day of taking the Strontium Boost, I started having stomach issues. Woke up several times during the night feeling sick to my stomach. Backed off the Strontium Boost and stomach issues went away. I have not reintroduced the Strontium Boost back into my system yet. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced stomach problems when taking the Strontium Boost. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Sharon,

Thank you for reaching out and we are so sorry to hear about the discomfort that you have been experiencing. Sharon, Strontium Boost should be taken 2-3 hours apart from consuming calcium-rich foods. Strontium Boost can be taken with or without food (as it reads on the product label), but most folks take it right before bed on an empty stomach. May we please suggest you to take Strontium on an empty stomach and see if that helps! We would love to work with you further to determine what’s causing this and make sure you’re feeling your best. Hi Judy,

Thanks for sharing your concern. AlgaeCal is clinically supported to naturally improve bone mineral density without side effects or any negative impact on teeth/jawbone health. In fact, a small number of our customers take our supplements for the sole purpose of naturally increasing their bone mineral density in the jaw/teeth to become eligible for surgery or dental procedures. While a bone density scan will typically measure critical fracture sites such as the spine and hip, you can be assured that benefits are being seen across the skeletal system! Hi!
I’m wondering (and hoping) it’s OK to take 1 AlgaeCal Plus at Breakfast, 1 at Lunch and 2 at Dinner. I typically get more calcium from my food at Breakfast so I’d like to split a dose and take one at Lunch too. Is that OK?
Also, how much water should we have when taking the Strontium before bed? I try not to drink a lot before bed because I hate getting up a lot in the middle of the night, but I want to make sure I have enough for proper absorption.
Lastly, is it OK to take Strontium at the same time as when I use my HRT lotion?
    Thank you so much!!

  185. Chelsea Dugas

    December 7, 2022 , 11:55 am

Thanks for reaching out to us with your questions, Robyn! Yes, you can absolutely split your first dose of AlgaeCal Plus into two doses if you like, there is no problem with that. As for the Strontium Boost, you don’t need to drink a full glass of water when you take it, and I’m not aware of any interactions between Strontium Boost and HRT lotion, but I always recommend confirming with your doctor or pharmacist as I’m not a medical professional. Hope this is helpful! 🙂

    December 6, 2022 , 8:56 am

    Hi Irene,

Thank you for reaching out to us! It’s wonderful to hear that you’ve placed your first order and gotten started on our program, but I’m sorry to hear that you’re having a tricky time swallowing your Strontium Boost. That said, I would love to provide some suggestions to help!

Irene, you are more than welcome to open your Strontium Boost and sprinkle into something semi-solid, and we suggest choosing something like nut butter, applesauce, or oatmeal (it might be a little unpleasant in water or juice!). It may also help to know that strontium and calcium compete for absorption, so we recommend separating Strontium Boost from foods and supplements containing calcium by at least 2 hours. Also, avoid adding to very hot foods /drinks as temperatures above 120F may reduce the potency.

If you need any further support as you get started with your AlgaeCal supplements, please don’t hesitate to reach out at 1-800-820-0184 and any of our Bone Health Consultants would be happy to assist you! 🙂

    Hello,
Can magnesium be taken at the same time as strontium boost. I would like to take both at bedtime.
    Thank you.

  189. Chelsea Dugas

    December 13, 2022 , 9:06 am

Thanks for reaching out to us, Lynne! Our understanding is that magnesium and Strontium Boost aren’t expected to interact and don’t require separation. That being said, if you are also taking AlgaeCal Plus, please note that it contains 350 mg of magnesium, which is set at an optimal and healthful 2:1 ratio with the calcium. Unless you really need it, we don’t recommend taking more than 150 mg of additional magnesium beyond what is in the AlgaeCal Plus. Hope this helps and feel free to contact our Bone Health Consultants 7 days a week at 1-800-820-0184 (USA & Canada, toll-free) or email [email protected] for more information and personalized support with this! 🙂

  195. Chelsea Dugas

    February 7, 2023 , 11:48 am

    Hi, Philip!

If you have any trouble swallowing capsules, you can definitely twist our AlgaeCal capsules open and sprinkle the flavourless powder into food and drinks, including applesauce! We suggest choosing something like a smoothie, yogurt, nut butter, or oatmeal (it might be a little unpleasant in water or juice!). Also, avoid adding to very hot foods /drinks as temperatures above 120F may reduce the potency of some nutrients. Hope this helps!

it would be nice if you added that you need to keep total calcium intake to 500 or less per sitting. I recently started Algae CAl and was taking with meals which were high in dietary calcium when I just happened across a facebook message that gave this info. It is not mentioned in this handout.

    Hi, Jean!

Thank you so much for providing this valuable feedback! I certainly understand where you are coming from, and I have passed this feedback on to our team :).

Jean, not to worry too much if you have been consuming more than 500 mg of calcium per sitting. While you get the biggest bang for your calcium buck when you consume no more than 500 mg at once, if you do consume a bit more, you’ll still absorb a little of the extra and the rest will simply be excreted! Of course, do let us know if you have any further questions or concerns. Our friendly Bone Health Consultants are available at 1-800-820-0184!

Hi, Helena! Thanks for reaching out to us with your question – to our knowledge, we are not aware of any interactions between AlgaeCal, red rice yeast, and CoQ10 and therefore don’t require any separation. In fact, many of our customers take these supplements as well! Should I avoid eating anything with high calcium when taking algaeplus?

  201. Brianne AlgaeCal

    May 23, 2023 , 9:33 am

Great question, K! Your body is able to absorb about 500mg of calcium at one time, and 2 capsules of AlgaeCal Plus provide 360mg. So you do have some cushion to consume dietary calcium. That said, if you are having a meal very rich in calcium, it may be best to take your AlgaeCal Plus at another time.

    I hope this helps!

I am afraid of the cost. I read Lara Pizzorno’s book, YOUR BONES. My primary care doctor accused Lara of promoting algaecal because she has been on its board (or somehow connected) since 2018. But she had her study with algaecal in 2010-11. If she was so satisfied, of course she would want to be a part of the good product.

Presently I take both calcium carbonate and calcium citrate after I analyzed what other nutrients came in the two pills. I made a regimen for myself based on the needs in her book. I can obtain those calcium tablets through my insurance. It does not offer algaecal. The price is the problem. Now, as I read your site, I have yet to come upon a price!
Also, I already have osteoporosis. I have been exercising and eating well based on the book.

  205. Yoori AlgaeCal

    July 4, 2023 , 7:28 pm

Thank you for reaching out, Elaine! We don’t recommend you to take additional supplemental calcium when taking AlgaeCal Plus, as we always take into consideration the calcium you are getting from your diet, which is usually about 400-500 mg daily. This, plus the 720 mg of calcium from AlgaeCal Plus, helps you to reach your recommended daily requirement very easily which is around 1200 mg for women over the age of 50 :). I hope this helps!

Are there benefits to topically applying the Triple Power oil? On face and scalp? The ingredients alone seem excellent for such application?

  209. Manja AlgaeCal

    July 26, 2023 , 11:31 am

Great question, Lacey! Some studies suggest that small amounts of Omega-3 can be absorbed through the skin, although the absorption rate was significantly lower compared to oral supplementation. AlgaeCal hasn’t conducted any studies on the potential benefits of topical application of the Triple Power Fish Oil. That said, omega-3 fatty acids are extremely hydrating and may help improve various skin conditions. However, since the Triple Power Fish Oil is sweetened, it may not be ideal for external application.

We are sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with constipation, Carol. We would not expect AlgaeCal Plus to cause constipation, as it is composed of 100% natural vitamins and minerals! That said, we understand that people can have different sensitivities to increased vitamin and mineral intake. A friendly note that a 2:1 calcium to magnesium works best for our bodies, and constipation can be a sign of an imbalance between calcium and magnesium. For more details on this topic, please visit our blog article HERE. The good news is that this is often something that is easily resolved through dietary changes and the right nutrition. I have emailed you to provide personalized support, so please keep an eye out in your inbox! 🙂

  238. ELIZABETH A

    June 9, 2024 , 2:08 am

Hi, I recently started my AC regime and am hopeful of my bone density improvement. All ingredients look good except for the added magnesium oxide which, from my research, is poorly absorbed by the body. That being the case, can I add my own magnesium citrate which I was taking before? Is there any specific reason you chose magnesium oxide instead of other forms of magnesium like citrate or glycinate considering magnesium oxide poor absorbability ?

  239. Yoori AlgaeCal

    June 11, 2024 , 6:50 pm

Thank you for sharing your concern, Elizabeth! While magnesium oxide is not as soluble as some other magnesium salts (and so it is not absorbed as rapidly in our body), magnesium oxide contains nearly triple the amount of actual magnesium than other forms. This is why even with the lower absorption rate, it still delivers more magnesium per capsule so more gets into your bloodstream to deliver all its many benefits to your bones and body. We actually have a thorough article on this topic, which you can find HERE :).

Please be mindful that AlgaeCal Plus already contains the optimal 2:1 ratio of Calcium (720mg) to Magnesium (350mg). Because of this, you generally do not need to continue taking any additional magnesium in supplement form! If you will be taking a little extra magnesium, be mindful of how your body is feeling and cut back if you need to. Extra magnesium can sometimes cause loose stools or GI discomforts, as it works as a natural laxative. I hope this helps! Feel free to give us a call at 1-800-820-0184 (US & Canada Toll-Free) if you have any follow-up questions!

I am taking AlgaeCal and Strontium Boost. For some reason it did not occur to me that both AlgaeCal and Strontium Boost both need to have capsules 2-3 hours apart from calcium rich foods. Well, I have severe swallowing issues so I have difficulty swallowing except calcium rich foods that help me swallow. I actually have been taking AlgaeCal and Strontium Boost for years now and haven’t fractured my spine yet. Would you have any ideas to help me out? I also am gluten free.

  241. Yoori AlgaeCal

    June 27, 2024 , 8:28 pm

Thank you for reaching out, Carol! It may be helpful to know that AlgaeCal does not necessarily have to be taken away from calcium-rich foods. Our bodies can absorb around 500 mg of calcium at a time, so it’s best to take no more than 500 mg in one sitting. However, if you consume more than this amount, you’ll still absorb calcium, although the absorption rate for the excess over 500 mg will be lower.

On the other hand, we do recommend keeping Strontium Boost away from calcium-rich foods by at least 2 hours for the best absorption. This is because calcium and strontium compete for absorption, and calcium always wins! You can try mixing Strontium Boost powder into applesauce or mashed bananas, which are low in calcium. I hope this helps! 🙂

    Hi,

My supplement just arrived (6 months supply). I am 39 and I just found out today That I have osteoporosis, I think it is secondary osteoporosis because I suffer from clusterheadaches and that means there is something not working properly with my hypothalamus, therefore causing my free testosterone to go way down resulting in decreased bone density. I already have a spine fracture, so I really need to increase my bone density before anything worst happens. In your experience, should I wait until after my free testosterone levels are back to normal to start taking the supplement? Or I can start taking it while in the process of fixing my free testosterone levels? Thank you -Pablo

Thanks for sharing your concern, Ann! The majority of calcium supplements provide an excessive dose of calcium on its own (or calcium with vitamin D), without the many other nutrients needed for absorption into bone. AlgaeCal is a whole food source of calcium with a wide variety of naturally occurring trace minerals, plus added vitamin D3, K2, and C, and boron! This perfect balance of vitamins and minerals all work together to keep calcium out of soft tissue like the heart and arteries, and deliver it straight to where it’s needed – our bones! The safety of AlgaeCal is confirmed in all three of our human clinical studies. To review the research, visit our website here. Additionally, if this is something you would like to share with your doctor, we have an excellent information sheet you can share with them here. I hope this helps! 🙂

The information is important and interesting. However, are you aware that I am not able to fit the entire list of How to Take my Calcium Supplements PDF form onto one page and my printer cuts the list off mid way on D3.

Therefore, I am not able to include the information about Collagen.

Thank you for sharing this feedback, Jayne! While we’re unable to adjust the PDF directly, you might be able to fit the entire list on one page by adjusting your print settings. When printing, look for the option labeled “Fit to Page” or “Scale to Fit” to ensure the content adjusts within the printable area. I hope this helps! 🙂

I can’t swallow pills well so can I take strontium in yogurt

    Hi Chris!

Thanks for your question! Strontium should be taken away from any rich source of calcium, like yogurt, as the two minerals compete for absorption. Instead, you could mix it with other semi-solid foods such as applesauce, peanut butter, or mashed banana. This way, you’ll still get the benefits without any absorption issues!

I’ve heard that calcium could cause heart problems in women. Any truth to that?

    Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for sharing your concern! The majority of calcium supplements provide an excessive dose of calcium on its own (or calcium with vitamin D), without the many other nutrients needed for proper absorption into bone.

AlgaeCal is different—it’s a whole food source of calcium with naturally occurring trace minerals, plus added vitamin D3, K2, C, and boron. This perfect balance of vitamins and minerals works together to keep calcium out of soft tissues like the heart and arteries and deliver it straight to where it’s needed—your bones!

The safety of AlgaeCal has been confirmed in all three of our human clinical studies. To review the research, you can visit our website here.
