Exercises For Stronger Hips

Updated: February 19, 2026

Hip exercises

Slash your risk of hip fractures with these quick, at-home moves from Justina Bailey

There’s a small, fragile section of bone that connects the top of your thigh bone to your hip. It’s called the femoral neck. And it’s one of the most common places for a hip to break.

Why? Because it’s made up primarily of trabecular bone. A softer, spongy type of bone that looks a bit like a honeycomb. That structure helps absorb shock, but it also makes this area far more vulnerable to bone loss. Which is why it’s so important to keep it as strong and supported as possible.

To help you do that, we asked Justina, founder of Studio Fitness Victoria and a nationally certified Pilates, Barre, and Essentrics® instructor, to share a set of simple, science-informed routines that specifically support the muscles and mechanics around your femoral neck.

    Hello Justina,
I have been taking AlgaeCal for years and working on strength training for my bones ever since I was diagnosed with osteoporosis and using a vibration plate. The information about finding the trocanter and focus on it during my hip movements will be very beneficial. I sensed that part of the tightness on my left hamstring may be coming from not sliding the trocanter back during my yoga and pilates. I am excited to take these tips into my yoga, pilates and vibration positions.
Thank you for sharing this fabulous educational video with me!

What a timely email! My 71 year old hubby had a bike accident before Christmas, fractured his femoral neck and had surgery. His bone density is very good. I have osteoporosis and if I had had that accident, it would have been un fixable. My hips have both been aching and this program is exactly what I need to strenghten those hip and glute muscles. My husbands injury is the motivation to do these daily. Thank you so much.

    Hello,
It is fe-moral (like in feral) with the emphasis on the 1st syllable, not femooral!
Such nice exercises, but the wrong pronunciation is painful to listen to and gives the wrong impression that you know nothing about the function and anatomy of femurs!
    Thank you,
    Erika Latchis, MD

I’ve had both hips replaced. is it worth me doing these exercises as there’s metal where the femoral bone used to be?

  41. Bee AlgaeCal

    January 30, 2026 , 9:42 am

Great question, Joan! Even with hip replacements, these exercises can still help strengthen the muscles and mechanics around your hips, which support balance and mobility. That said, it’s important to check in with your doctor or physiotherapist first before trying new exercises – they can recommend safe, tailored movements that protect your joints while keeping you strong and active. Let us know if you have any other questions!

Hello, sorry but I’m having difficulty understanding a couple of words you are saying: torcanter and sift/sitbone? I don’t know what those are. Please help me with this.

    Thank you.

  45. Yoori AlgaeCal

    February 2, 2026 , 6:03 pm

Hi Donna, great question — thanks for asking! 😊

    • Trochanter refers to a bony bump on the top of your thigh bone that you can feel on the outside of your hip. It’s an important landmark for hip movement and strength.
    • Sit bones are the two bones you feel underneath you when sitting on a firm chair — they help guide proper hip hinging and balance in these exercises.

We really appreciate you watching and taking the time to clarify. Any other questions, don’t hesitate!
