The No-Nonsense Guide To Buying The Best Collagen

Updated: September 11, 2024

Pouring collagen in water

Collagen is seemingly everywhere nowadays, from protein bars to creamers to supplements. The choices are vast, and they all boast incredible health benefits. But with so many types, flavors, and brands available, it can be a real challenge to choose the best collagen supplement for you. Don’t worry! This article will help you find the perfect option for your health goals. First things first…

What Are You Hoping To Gain From Collagen?

The first step is to understand why you’re considering collagen. Do you want smoother skin, stronger nails, thicker, healthier hair? Maybe you’re hoping to ease joint pain or increase your bone density? Identifying your primary goal is essential because various collagens have different effects on the body. Knowing what you’re aiming for will help you choose the collagen that’s right for you.

Don’t Buy Collagen. Buy Clinically-Supported Collagen.

Choosing the right collagen supplement is crucial to getting the specific benefits you want. Simply picking up any random collagen off the shelf at your local health food store won’t cut it—this is your health we’re talking about, and it’s too important to leave to chance. So, when searching for a collagen supplement, make sure to keep the following critical factors in mind…

1. Clinically-Supported Ingredients

You don’t want collagen. You want clinically-supported collagen, specifically one backed by rigorous scientific studies to support your health goals.

2. Clinically-Backed Doses

Some collagen supplements might have the right ingredients but the wrong dose! For example, if research suggests you need 5g of collagen for joint relief, but your supplement provides only 1.2g, it won’t be effective. You’re not getting the necessary dose, so you’re throwing money away.

3. Soluble, Palatable, & Digestible

The best self-care routines are the ones that you can easily stick to. That’s why it’s important to choose a collagen powder that dissolves quickly, has no taste, has been proven to be well absorbed and is gentle on your digestive system.

Now, let’s look at which collagen supplement is best for your specific goals. Let’s start with the best collagen for sagging skin, wrinkles, nails, and hair growth…

Want A Beauty Boost? Choose Verisol®

This patented collagen is supported by 6 clinical studies and is used by over 300 beauty brands worldwide to deliver proven benefits for skin, hair, and nails.

It Improves Skin Elasticity

Picture your skin regaining its youthful elasticity and moisture while those stubborn wrinkles smooth out and vanish. Verisol® can make that a reality! In a study, women aged 35 to 55 experienced a 10% boost in skin elasticity in just 28 days, with noticeably improved overall moisture1. The result? A younger, more vibrant appearance!

It Reduces Wrinkles

Research reveals that women taking Verisol® experienced a remarkable 32% reduction in eye wrinkles within 8 weeks! The study also found a significant boost in the participants’ procollagen type 1 levels (up 65%) and elastin levels (up 18%)2. Procollagen 1 is a marker of new collagen formation. Elastin is the protein that enables our skin to be flexible – for example when we smile – and to return to its prior, line-free shape afterwards. Collagen and elastin work together to provide us with firm, supple skin.

It Reduces Cellulite

A groundbreaking study involving 105 women aged 24 to 50 with moderate cellulite had them consume 2.5 grams of Verisol® daily for 6 months. Their progress was assessed at the start, midpoint, and conclusion of the study. The results? Women taking Verisol® experienced a significant reduction in cellulite and achieved noticeably smoother skin on their thighs3, leaving them with a rejuvenated, younger appearance!

It Makes Nails Stronger

A study spanning 24 weeks revealed that Verisol® can increase nail growth by 12%. Even more impressive, participants experienced a 42% decrease in nail breakage4. Essentially, their nails not only grew faster but also appeared stronger and more youthful.

It Makes Hair Thicker

A 16-week double-blind placebo-controlled study found that women using Verisol® saw a noticeable increase in hair thickness5. Specifically, the cells in their hair follicles grew by 31% more than those not taking the supplement. This suggests that Verisol® not only enhances hair volume but also contributes to stronger, more vibrant hair growth.

The Best Collagen Supplement For Women

Verisol® is easily absorbed and quickly enters the bloodstream to reach essential cells like fibroblasts in our skin, hair and nails. Once there, it encourages these cells to create more of the collagen, elastin, and proteoglycans that keep skin looking young, nails healthy, and hair thick and lustrous.  The result? Fewer wrinkles, more elastic skin, thicker hair, and stronger nails, among other benefits! So, if those are the benefits you’re looking for – then make sure that your collagen supplement includes Verisol®. It’s the best collagen supplement for women looking for a beauty boost.

Want Relief From Achy Knees? Choose Fortigel®

A 2011 study6 by Tufts Medical Center and Harvard University examined the long-term impact of Fortigel® on early-stage knee osteoarthritis sufferers. The study divided 30 participants into two groups: one received a daily dose of 10 grams of Fortigel® for 48 weeks, and the other was given a placebo.

MRI scans were taken at the start, halfway through, and at the end of the study period. Remarkably, those taking Fortigel® saw an 8% increase in knee cartilage density after 48 weeks, a significant improvement over the placebo group. You can see the medical images from the study below, illustrating the positive changes.

fortigel study

These results indicate that Fortigel® can help regrow joint cartilage in the knee. This clinically-supported collagen is the best collagen for joint health. And the benefits don’t stop there…

Those who took Fortigel® reported feeling less joint pain.

In a 2021 study7 at the University of Freiburg, researchers discovered that taking just 5g Fortigel® significantly eased joint pain related to physical activity. They invited 180 active young people, all dealing with knee pain during sports, to participate in their study.

The participants were randomly assigned into two groups. One group received Fortigel®, while the other group got a placebo. After three months, they evaluated everyone’s knee pain. The result? The participants who had taken Fortigel® reported less pain during sports than those who got the placebo. This greatly reduced the need for over-the-counter pain relievers, ice packs, gels, and trips to the physiotherapist.

The study showed that Fortigel® had a positive effect on knee joint pain—particularly during activity. In fact, participants saw a 38% reduction in “pain during activity” after taking Fortigel® compared to the placebo group.

Want Better Mobility? Choose UC II®

Over time, people tend to lose a bit of the flexibility in their knees – about 1 degree per decade on average. But, a 2022 study8 found that UC-II® collagen can significantly change that. In the study, adults aged 20-55 with joint discomfort took either this collagen supplement or a placebo for 24 weeks…

The collagen group saw a dramatic improvement. And their knees felt as if they had regained a decade’s worth of flexibility. Specifically, their ability to bend their knees improved 15 times more than the placebo group. This means that taking just 40 mg of this specific collagen daily could make your knees feel ten years younger.

Makes Walking Easier

In a 2022 study9, UC-II® collagen was shown to significantly ease knee discomfort and enhance mobility among 96 healthy adults aged 20-55. Participants taking 40 mg of UC-II® collagen for 24 weeks experienced a notable reduction in knee pain during activities like twisting, walking downstairs, and on flat surfaces, and saw a decrease in joint discomfort post-activity, particularly those aged 20-35.

Impressively, those on UC-II® collagen walked an extra 747 steps daily. This study underscores UC-II® collagen’s ability to not only make walking more comfortable but also to help individuals easily achieve their daily step goals, promoting a more active and comfortable lifestyle.

Want Stronger Bones? Choose Fortibone®

This unique collagen – supported by clinical studies from the University of Vienna, the University of Freiburg, and the Collagen Research Institute in Kiel, Germany – targets bone health by encouraging the production of the collagen matrix in bones.

How Does It Work?

Fortibone®‘s special peptides signal our bone-forming osteoblast cells to boost their synthesis of collagen, which is crucial for strong and healthy bones: 30-40% of bone is composed of collagen! It also helps slow down the breakdown of bone tissue, leading to an overall increase in bone strength.

A 12-month study10 involving 180 women with low bone mass revealed that daily intake of 5g Fortibone® significantly improved bone density, especially in those with osteopenia or osteoporosis.

And in a follow-up study11 from 2021 Fortibone® was found to significantly boost bone strength in postmenopausal women over four years. One group saw their bone density increase by 5.79% in the spine and 4.21% in the hip area. Another group, which began the collagen supplements after initially receiving a placebo, experienced even bigger gains in their spine at 8.16%. These studies show that Fortibone® is the best collagen supplement for bone health.

  58. Renee

    June 11, 2024 , 10:41 am

Why do you say: Generally, taking collagen supplements is considered safe for most people. Are there side effects, or is there a health reason certain people should not take collagen. Also does Collagen build up in the blood stream like calcium does if you do not take vitamin K to go into the bones.

  59. Yoori AlgaeCal

    June 11, 2024 , 7:09 pm

Thank you for reaching out, Renee! We use the term “generally” because, although collagen is not typically associated with adverse side effects, nutrition can be complex and some people may be sensitive to higher levels of collagen intake.

Collagen doesn’t typically build up in the bloodstream in the same way that calcium can if vitamin K isn’t present to assist in directing it to the bones. Collagen is a protein that serves as a structural component in various tissues throughout the body, including bones, skin, and joints. When consumed as a supplement, collagen is broken down into its constituent amino acids during digestion and then absorbed by the body for use in various tissues. I hope this helps! 🙂

Does collagen help with female pattern baldness

  61. Yoori AlgaeCal

    June 11, 2024 , 6:41 pm

Great question, Renne! While the 16-week double-blind placebo-controlled study referenced in the article found that women using Verisol® saw a noticeable increase in hair thickness, this study was not carried with women who have pattern baldness specifically. We suggest reaching out to a dermatologist or healthcare provider who can provide the best advice for you!

    How do I get Fortigel

  91. Manja AlgaeCal

    June 12, 2024 , 6:58 am

Hi Sheri, thank you for your question. Our new Collagen Complete supplement will contain Fortigel® along with other premium collagen ingredients like Verisol®, UCII-®, and Fortibone®. By combining the different collagen sources in Collagen Complete, we’re aiming to provide comprehensive bone and joint support.

If you’re specifically looking to use Fortigel® on its own, while we can’t recommend a particular brand, I’d suggest researching reputable companies that offer collagen supplements containing Fortigel® as the primary ingredient. Look for ones with good customer reviews and third-party testing to ensure quality.

Let us know if you have any other questions! We’re excited to be launching this premium collagen formula soon.

This sounds like a great addition to the AlgaeCal lineup! However, I drink very few if any hot beverages. I began adding collagen powder to my breakfast protein drink/smoothie several months ago. What are the sources of the 4 types of collagen in this product?

The studies seem to have involved mostly women. Has any research involved men?

Are there any contraindications for men taking this product?

  117. Manja AlgaeCal

    June 12, 2024 , 12:50 pm

    Hi CD,

Thank you for your questions! The Collagen Complete product incorporates four types of collagen, each sourced from different natural origins. Regarding your query about the involvement of men in the studies, while some studies, particularly those supporting Verisol, mainly included women, other types of collagen, which focus more on joint and bone health, involved both men and women. In total, there are 25 studies published on the four types of collagen included in Collagen Complete.

As for contraindications for men taking this product, there are none. Collagen is generally well-tolerated by both men and women. We’ve ensured that our product is suitable for everyone seeking its benefits.

For more detailed information about the sources of collagen and other aspects of the product, we’ll be sharing comprehensive details closer to the official launch date, which is set for June 18th. Stay tuned for updates!

As referenced in this blog article, a 12-month study involving 180 women with low bone mass revealed that daily intake of 5g Fortibone® significantly improved bone density, especially in those with bone loss. And in a follow-up study from 2021 Fortibone® was found to significantly boost bone strength in postmenopausal women over four years. One group saw their bone density increase by 5.79% in the spine and 4.21% in the hip area.

As to flexabilities in your knees, UC-II® collagen can help. Over time, people tend to lose a bit of the flexibility in their knees – about 1 degree per decade on average. But, a 2022 study found that UC-II® collagen can significantly change that. In the study, adults aged 20-55 with joint discomfort took either this collagen supplement or a placebo for 24 weeks… The collagen group saw a dramatic improvement. And their knees felt as if they had regained a decade’s worth of flexibility. Specifically, their ability to bend their knees improved 15 times more than the placebo group.

A friendly reminder that we’re launching our very own collagen supplement, which is packed with all the four powerful collagens—Verisol®, Fortigel®, UC-II®, and Fortibone®—each with clinically supported benefits for skin, hair, nails, joints, and bones. The scheduled launch date is June 18th, so stay tuned for more information! 🙂

  164. Yoori AlgaeCal

    June 27, 2024 , 7:12 pm

Thank you for reaching out, Sharon! While collagen is generally safe for consumption and well-digested by most individuals, there could be rare situations where someone may experience sensitivity or an allergic reaction, particularly if they have pre-existing allergies to bovine collagen or chicken.

You can trust that Collagen Complete is entirely natural and has been deemed safe for consumption, backed by more than 25 clinical studies conducted over the years.

If you have concerns or pre-existing sensitivities, I would suggest consulting with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen. HERE is our Doctor Information Sheet for your convenience. I hope this helps!

Nowhere on here does it say what the ingredients are. As a pretty strict vegetarian, I’m interested in a collagen product that does not have beef in it.

  166. Yoori AlgaeCal

    June 27, 2024 , 7:58 pm

Hi Bonnie, our Collagen Complete contains a blend of bovine and chicken collagen, sourced from animal by-products. Therefore, it is not suitable for strict vegetarians or individuals following a vegetarian lifestyle.

While collagen supplements are derived from animal sources, there are alternative vegan supplements that may support cartilage health and overall joint function. However, it’s important to note that these alternatives may not directly “trigger” cartilage growth in the same way collagen does, but they can still provide support for joint health and potentially aid in overall healing and recovery. We actually have a blog article on A Vegetarian’s Guide to Collagen HERE, which I hope will be helpful for you :).

Can I to take algaecal and strontium without cápsules?

  178. Yoori AlgaeCal

    June 27, 2024 , 7:36 pm

You sure can, Norma! You can twist them open and sprinkle the flavorless powder into food. We suggest choosing something like a smoothie, yogurt, nut butter, applesauce, or oatmeal because AlgaeCal powder doesn’t fully dissolve until stomach acid is present (it might be a little unpleasant in water or juice!). Also, avoid adding to very hot foods as temperatures above 120F may reduce the potency of some nutrients.

Another thing to keep in mind for Strontium Boost, is to keep it away from any calcium / calcium rich foods for at least 2 hours, as calcium and strontium compete for absorption. So we suggest mixing Strontium Boost powder into applesauce or mashed baananas. Hope this helps!

Why is AlgaeCal not recommended for people with kidney disease?

Is your Collagen supplement safe for people with stage 3 CKD?

  192. Yoori AlgaeCal

    June 27, 2024 , 8:17 pm

Thank you for reaching out, Susan! AlgaeCal Plus is safe for those with kidney disease, but it is always best to confirm this with your doctor. It’s the Strontium Boost that is NOT recommended for individuals with chronic kidney disease. See, Strontium is eliminated by our kidneys, so it may accumulate in patients with chronic kidney disease, as their kidneys’ ability to filter the blood is compromised. Anyone whose GFR is 60 or less, we always recommend discussing using strontium citrate with their doctor. We have a printable information sheet you can share with them here: https://cdn.algaecal.com/wp-content/uploads/doctors-overview-bbp.pdf.

That said, to be clear, for anyone who has perfectly functioning kidneys, Strontium will NOT compromise the health of your kidneys :).

Susan, if you have any medical condition, we suggest consulting with your doctor before adding in any new supplements, including our Collagen Complete. HERE is our Doctor Information Sheet for your convenience. I hope this helps!

I thought I read somewhere on your site that collagen needed to be taken with another supplement, but I can’t find it and don’t remember what the other was? Am I remembering correctly – does it need to be taken with something else?

  199. Yoori AlgaeCal

    June 27, 2024 , 8:45 pm

Thank you for reaching out, Michelle! Collagen Complete can provide its benefits without the need for an additional supplement.

That said, if your goal is to increase bone density, we suggest taking Collagen Complete along with our Bone Builder Pack, as bones need both collagen and minerals to be strong.

FORTIBONE® collagen supports the formation of a healthy collagen matrix within your bones. Then, the 13 essential minerals in the Bone Builder Pack adhere to this collagen framework, creating strong and healthy bones. I hope this helps! 🙂

Based on our supplier’s information, the cattle used for producing these collagen peptides are predominantly grass-fed and seasonally pastured. Hello. I have moderate osteoarthritis in my knees. Do I understand correctly that your collagen will regrow my cartilage in my knees? I also have osteoarthritis in my spine, specifically in L2 & L3, together with five degenerative discs, which then developed into scoliosis, which has resulted in constant pain and the inability to walk distance without taking a break every few minutes and the inability to stand more than five or 10 minutes. That being said, will taking collagen decrease the pain to allow me to walk and stand for longer periods?

    July 8, 2024 , 5:25 pm

Thank you for reaching out, Deborah, and I’m truly sorry to hear of the struggle you are going through.

Deborah, I believe our Collagen Complete can help as Collagen Complete functions by supplying specific small proteins that aid in the formation of new cartilage in the joints, particularly a crucial type known as type II collagen. This process supports the repair and thickening of cartilage, ultimately improving joint function!

Moreover, our patented collagen, Fortigel®, found in Collagen Complete, has been clinically shown to alleviate joint pain and enhance the thickness of cartilage tissue, resulting in more comfortable joints.

This STUDY conducted on 147 young athletes experiencing joint pain highlights the significant improvements in pain levels after six months of using Fortigel®. This positive outcome shows the effectiveness of Fortigel® in alleviating joint discomfort, enabling individuals to engage more comfortably in their athletic and daily activities.

This STUDY conducted over 48 weeks shows that Fortigel® can regenerate cartilage in humans and significantly improve knee cartilage health.

This additional STUDY demonstrates a reduction in joint pain associated with physical activity, leading to improved joint mobility. Such findings further validate the efficacy of Fortigel® in enhancing joint health and supporting individuals in maintaining an active lifestyle with reduced discomfort.

Of course, we always suggest discussing with your doctor if our Collagen Complete will be a good fit for you. HERE is our Doctor Information Sheet for your convenience. I hope this helps! 🙂

I love the way your articles are written, and it seems to be pervasive throughout the site. In today’s vitamin jungle, I would really like to see AlgaiCal have the contents verified. It isn’t that I don’t trust the brand, it’s that blind trust is just not wise in todays climate; not your fault, just the bad guys making it bad for the good guys. Can you shed some light on why this would not be a selling point or an ‘engendering confidence’ move for the company? Thank you.

Hello, I have a question regarding the age groups for the studies conducted for the best possible outcomes in the largest possible ranges. I think I understand why the 60+ demo was not included in any of the studies, and wonder if (we) should not buy Collagen Complete, since the researchers already knew or suspected it would lower the percentages of success in the preferred demo. Can you share with me (who is not included in your studies), a currently healthy 63 fit woman (cyclist with 44K on my road bike)
with recently diagnosed degenerative bone disease in lower spine. I have a chance to fight this, but see that I am outside of your guarantee.

  209. Yoori AlgaeCal

    July 9, 2024 , 3:18 pm

    Hi Catherine,

Thank you for reaching out with your question. We understand your concern regarding the age groups included in the referenced studies shared by our suppliers. The decision to exclude the 60+ demographic in certain studies was based on specific research parameters, not on an expectation of lower success rates in that age group.

While most of the referenced studies did not include individuals over 60, it does not necessarily mean that Collagen Complete would be ineffective for you. As a healthy and active 63-year-old cyclist, you have an excellent foundation for managing your health. In fact, one study (HERE) found that Fortibone, a component of our Collagen Complete, improved bone density and bone markers in postmenopausal women with an average age of 64.3 years.

Catherine, we sure believe our Collagen Complete will be beneficial for you, as it is clinically supported to increase bone density, enhance joint cartilage thickness, and reduce joint pain. Please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-820-0184 (toll-free US & Canada) for more information and personalized support. We are happy to help! 🙂

Coral, Collagen Complete features a distinct formulation compared to AlgaeCal. It’s synergistic formulation designed to benefit the health of bones, joints, and skin. It contains the research-proven collagen peptide blends Verisol®, Fortigel®, UC-II®, and Fortibone® derived from collagen proteins. This unique blend of collagen is supported by clinical research showing its efficacy for collagen production, bone strength, joint health, and also skin elasticity. Please let us know if you have any further questions! 🙂

    Cow ?

  241. Samantha AlgaeCal

    October 29, 2024 , 9:33 am

Great question, Fristiana! Our Collagen Complete formulation doesn’t contain any added sugars. Additionally, according to our supplier, the cattle used for producing these collagen peptides are predominantly grass-fed and seasonally pastured. They also undergo stringent veterinary inspections before being approved for human consumption. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Thank you for reaching out, Diane! Collagen Complete is free from common allergens such as shellfish, gluten, soy, and dairy. If you have allergies to beef, chicken, or eggs, it’s not recommended to take Collagen Complete, as it is sourced from cows and chickens.

If you have an allergy, I would suggest checking with a doctor or pharmacist for their best recommendation. HERE is our Doctor Information Sheet for your convenience. I hope this helps! 🙂

Hello, I have disc degeneration in my back and I have been in horrible pain for months . I never realized I had this problem until July 19,2024 . I was in Walmart parking lot and a car hit my body while I was walking in the store . I’m 59 and feeling like I’m 80 please guide me in what to take to help . I’ve been to doctors for months no help they just want me on meds

  245. Samantha AlgaeCal

    November 12, 2024 , 12:17 pm

Sherri, I’m so sorry to hear about the pain you’ve been experiencing, especially after such a traumatic incident. Disc degeneration, combined with the injury from being hit by the car, can cause a lot of discomfort, and it’s understandable that you’re feeling frustrated with the lack of solutions from your doctors.
If you’ve been diagnosed with bone loss, our products may be beneficial for you. However, since your situation involves disc degeneration, I would also recommend speaking with a healthcare provider who specializes in back pain or spine health, like a functional medicine doctor. It might be worth seeking a second opinion if you haven’t already. Many of our customers have found the website ifm.org (Institute for Functional Medicine) to be a helpful resource for finding practitioners who may offer more holistic approaches! I hope this helps.

Are these animals organically raised ? And are your chickens also pasture raised?

  247. Samantha AlgaeCal

    November 12, 2024 , 12:22 pm

Great question, Anika! Based on our supplier’s information, the cattle used for producing these collagen peptides are predominantly grass-fed and seasonally pastured. They undergo stringent veterinary inspection before being approved for human consumption. Specifically, Fortibone is sourced from bovine bones, and Verisol + Fortigel are sourced from bovine hides/skin. Undenatured Type II Collagen (UC-II) comes from chicken breast cartilage sourced from the USA. I hope this helps!

I want to take Collagen Complete but I cannot find any information on your website about testing for heavy metals or other toxins. Please let me know what, if any, third party testing you conduct on Collagen Complete. Many collagen products contain lead, mercury, and other toxic ingredients and I want to make sure Collagen Complete has been thoroughly tested before I purchase it.

    Thanks

  255. Yoori AlgaeCal

    November 19, 2024 , 3:04 pm

Thank you for reaching out, Karin! As you may be aware, heavy metals like Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromium, Lead, and Mercury are naturally present in various environmental sources, including the air, water, and soil. Consequently, they can be found in the foods we consume. However, our bodies possess natural detoxification mechanisms to eliminate low levels of these metals.

To address concerns about heavy metals, Collagen Complete is manufactured in a facility in the USA that undergoes audits by the third-party organization National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) to ensure compliance with Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) standards. Additionally, our collagen undergoes third-party testing for safety and quality. This rigorous process guarantees that heavy metal levels, including Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromium, Lead, and Mercury, remain within the acceptable range set by the FDA.

I hope this information helps, Karin! Please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-820-0184 (US & Canada Toll-free) or email [email protected] for any additional questions. We are happy to help. 🙂
