Do you really need supplements?
When you reach for that bottle of vitamins in the grocery store, do you wonder if you should buy it or eat more vegetables instead?
The answer may surprise you.
Government sponsored research has found large scale deficiencies in many nutrients in the general population, including: omega-3 fats, vitamin D, folate, zinc, magnesium, and iron.
So why are we so depleted in nutrients in a time when we have access to a greater variety of food than ever?
4 Reasons You Are Nutrient-Depleted
According to the internationally recognized doctor, Mark Hyman, here are the 4 primary reasons:
1. Depleted Soil
Wild crops contain dramatically higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and essential fats. The animals and vegetables we eat today contain fewer nutrients. This is because the mineral content of the soil that the crops are grown in becomes depleted over time from repeated harvests. (This is why AlgaeCal always recommends organic food. Many organic farms practice crop rotation to prevent soil depletion.)
2. Long Transit Time for Delivery
Did you know produce now travels an average of 1500-2000 miles from farm to market? Today we enjoy a wide variety of food from all over the world. This also means produce can be picked weeks and even months before we see it in our grocery stores. I was shocked to learn that some vegetables to lose 50% of their nutrients in as little as 5 days!
3. Processed Foods
Our diets today contain many products that have been chemically processed. These foods are usually made from refined ingredients and artificial substances. Although processed foods taste good, they lack any real nutritional value.
4. Stress Levels
We all lead busy lives. Between work, family, and other obligations, our society’s stress levels are maxed out. And stress takes a toll on our bodies. It weakens our immune system and speeds up the aging process. To combat the negative effects of stress, we need to fuel our bodies with more nutrients so they can perform optimally. Some nutrients, like magnesium are needed in larger quantities when we are under stress.
Simply put, even a perfect diet may not provide us with enough vitamins and minerals.
This is why Dr. Hyman recommends we all take a:
- Multivitamin: to ensure you get all the basic vitamins and minerals your body needs. Including B vitamins as they are vital for energy production and antioxidants such as vitamin E, C and selenium, as they may help lower oxidative stress.
- Vitamin D3 and Magnesium supplement: Dr. Hyman recommends both for general health most people are deficient in each. We certainly concur.
Our AlgaeCal Plus formulation contains the maximum allowed amount of magnesium (350 mg per day). It also has 1600 IU of vitamin D which is a substantial amount. Since AlgaeCal Plus is a bone health formulation it also contains vitamin K2, boron, vitamin C, and all the trace minerals. You may not have known AlgaeCal Plus is supportive of your overall health, not just your bones.
- Fish Oil: Thousands of clinical studies show that EPA and DHA have many benefits. These omega 3 fatty acids support heart health, inflammation and joint health to name a few. Fish oil has also been shown to improve bone health by enhancing bone mineral content. It has also been shown to increase calcium absorption by activating vitamin D and vitamin K2.
Triple Power Omega-3 Fish Oil goes above and beyond its competitors. It not only has clinical doses of omega 3 fatty acids, but also has arguably two of the world’s most potent antioxidants: turmeric curcumin and astaxanthin.
Following a nutrient dense diet is the first step to leading a healthier life. But getting enough of the right nutrients from diet alone is nearly impossible. That’s why it’s ok to get a little help from supplements to ensure you’re getting what you need.
